A Miraculous Medicine of the 19th Century
There was once a time that a diagnosis of diabetes was a death sentence to patients. Over one hundred years ago the prognosis for children with diabetes was poor, because most survived less than a year from their diagnosis. Adults had a slightly better prognosis with less than 20 percent lived past 10 years of their diagnosis. That all changed when insulin was discovered to be an effective form of treatment in 1922. Sir Fredrick Banting, a physician and scientist was the co-founder of insulin, which as we know now is vital in regulating blood sugars. Millions of people now have full lives because of his discovery and passion towards diabetes. In fact, Banting became the first Canadian and the youngest person at the age of 32 to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology /Medicine.
While his contribution for diabetes has saved countless lives, we also owe thanks to biochemist Fred Sanger and Dorothy Hodgkin because they took Bantings insulin to the next level by synthesizing it. Which allowed it to be mass produced and save more lives. In 1978, the synthetic form of insulin was put on the market and to this day we still use it.
What really astounds me is that the cost of insulin in 1978 per vial was $1.49, which converts to $8.86 today. In 1996 that same vial of insulin became $21 . . . 2004 it jumped to $60 . . . in 2019 the price per vial hit an all-time high of $300. And again this is the same synthetic insulin used in 1978! Do you have any idea how much that adds up to for diabetics on top of everything else they need to stay on top of their diabetes? The cost to live is astronomical if you have diabetes.
This bring me to the BIG point . . . if you’re a diabetic and struggle to make ends meet because of your condition. There is hope and we want to help you get there. By changing up your diet to consist of little to no carbohydrates you can reduce the amount of insulin you need and in some cases completely get off of it with the guidance of a medical doctor. You have the opportunity while in this program to not only change your life for the better but also save thousands of dollars in your future.
"I am a firm believer in the theory that you can do or be anything that you wish in this world, within reason, if you are prepared to make the sacrifices, think and work hard enough and long enough."
– Sir Frederick Banting
