Continued Support for the use of a Low Carb Diet

I had a patient send an article in last week and would like to this chance to share it with everyone. The article is titled, "Interest in the Ketogenic Diet Grows for Weight Loss and Type 2 Diabetes." It was printed in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association) January 16, 2018, volume 319, number 3 (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2669724).

The article was a synopsis of a research study designed to assess the effect of a low carb diet on individuals who have Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The findings show a low carb diet leads three times more weight loss than the traditional low fat calorie restrictive diet. The weight loss is great but more interesting was the decreased need for diabetes medications along with an improvement in their A1c as highlighted by this quote:

"It seems to help people not only lose weight but reduce their requirement for [diabetes] medications, and they get improvements in their hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c], which is an end point for diabetes management." Steven Heymsfield MD

These findings are consistent with what we see every day here at Health Transitions Clinic. Please keep in mind if you or anyone you know plans to utilize a low carb diet it is important to consult your health professional or come to our clinic to receive the trained assistance you need for safely pairing diet with your health conditions.

My hope is that this is the 1st of many articles as the correlation between the improvement of type 2 diabetes and a low carb diet continues to be better understood. Hopefully with time these kinds of studies will lead in the adjustments of standard treatments for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and changes to national diet recommendations. The best way to make a difference is to start the fire then sit back to watch as the flames slowly grow until they have sparked a movement. It is clear diet is an important component to health; in the future I'm sure there will be even more emphasis on the importance of a well-controlled diet for optimal health.
