Holiday Madness

It’s no secret that here in America, we love our “poisons.” So much that we often center our entire holidays around cookies, pastries or candies. In fact, the food industry seems to come up with a new set of sweet “must haves” every holiday season – everything from sugary flavored creamers, to snowman-shaped cinnamon rolls (we made that one up…but it might exist!). There can be temptations everywhere you go; however, this past year you’ve worked so hard to change your behaviors, habits, and diet. Let this season be a test for your commitment to be the better you!

Here are 5 simple tips to help you get through the season:

  1. Stay on your usual schedule. One of the best ways to avoid temptations is to stick with your typical eating routine. Avoid skipping meals or eating at off times. You’ll be less likely to stray from the Diaeta if you feel satisfied with your meals.
  2. Tell your friends and family that you don’t want any sugary treats. This is a simple yet effective way to avoid receiving sweets. Your loved ones likely already know about your new Diaeta but may just need a reminder during the holidays. You can always make alternative suggestions such as seasoned nuts, cheeses, or a fun vegetable dip.
  3. Start new traditions that don’t revolve around food Examples include playing holiday games, ice skating, hosting a holiday movie night, volunteering at a soup kitchen, revisiting old memories in photo albums, or taking a walk around a new neighborhood to view the holiday lights.Make Diaeta-friendly treats. Instead of baking cookies or other poison-filled sweets, make healthier alternatives to pass out. Examples:trail mix filled with mixed nuts, seasoning blends, or infused olive oils
  4. Donate! If you’re gifted sweets, donate them to a homeless shelter.

Keep in mind that when it comes to sticking to the Diaeta, it’s not about having the good days to compensate for the bad. It’s about making changes that last and lead to a better you. However, if all else fails and you get off track…Don’t panic! Simply recognize that you had poison and it probably tasted amazing because sugar is one of the most addictive substances readily available to us. Then, simply re-focus and get back on track. If your cravings come back, use the knowledge and wisdom you’ve already built to reset and recommit to the healthier and more positive you.

Finally, this holiday season celebrate how far you’ve come over the past year – whether you’ve lost weight, improved the management of your diabetes, or are just feeling better overall. Let your successes motivate you to stay on track through the holidays!
