Is Chili Safe on a Low Carb Diet?

Fall has arrived and with that we start to have chilling temperatures. People will start busting out soups and chili to warm them up, but are we allowed to eat chili when doing low carb? Chili can be made in many ways but does that mean we can enjoy the chili without feeling guilty?

In short, the answer is yes. Chili is a fall and winter classic across America just as curry is a classic through many parts of India. That being said the different versions of chili tend to follow their regional cooking styles. For example:

  • Southwest style chili typically has roasted corn and is much chunkier.
  • Green chili is made with pork butt hatch pepper and/or Anaheim peppers in areas of the southwest as well.
  • Texas style chili has very little to no beans and is typically going to be made with chunks of meat similar to a stew.
  • Midwest chili is typically a bean and ground beef style chili.

The chili you eat could vary greatly in the amount of carbohydrates. So the best options for chili would be to make the traditional chili you're used to but then adding some different vegetable to it. If your chili recipe already consists of tomatoes and beans, we recommend adding peppers, cauliflower, onions, garlic, more beans like kidney, garbanzo, or lima. This will help bulk up your chili without adding a lot of carbohydrates, and still have a well-rounded meal.
